Team Muthaiga started strongly on the opening day of the 97th edition of the Tannahill Shield opening a four point gap at the top as Kenya’s top amateurs squared it out in the annual foursomes tournament at Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

It was a dream start for the youthful Muthaiga side as the youngsters dropped only two points on the opening day and remained unbeaten to rekindle the Kiambu road sides hopes of capturing the title they last won in 2017.

“We had a very good outing. The team is hungry for victory. We played with a lot of confidence this time round. We want to stretch the lead as much as possible in tomorrow’s two rounds so that we shall not be under much pressure on Sunday,” said Jeff Kubwa, Team Muthaiga coach.

While Muthaiga was basking in glory, it was a bad day in office for defending champions and hosts Team Royal.   The Ngong road side only managed two wins all day to close the day in eighth position setting the stage for a battle royale tomorrow as Team Royal angles for a third consecutive title.

Team Western and Team Vetlab complete the podium places after bagging 10 points each to keep Muthaiga in check.

Fresh from relegation, it was a baptism of fire for Team Karen as they only managed four points all day to finish in ninth position. Tomorrow will serve some interesting fixtures as all teams will be engaged in a 36-hole shootout.

The inter-club foursome event is played over four rounds in three days. One round is played on Friday, while Saturday features a grueling 36-hole test with players wrapping up the tournament with an 18-hole round on Sunday morning.

The competition brings together nine teams each comprising of 10 players. Traditionally, the team that finishes last among the Nairobi based clubs will be relegated. Mombasa and Western teams are permanent invitees and are therefore never in danger of being relegated.
