Stewart Cink is on the verge of breaking the RBC Heritage course record after yesterday’s -2 third round score saw him open a five stroke lead at top of the leaderboard heading to the clubhouse on -18 gross.
The 47 year old has been in fine form after kick starting his career last year with a win at the Safeway Open, ending an 11 year trophy drought. Since then, Cink has not looked back and notched an impressive T12 finish at The Masters last week. He carded an identical 8-under par in the opening two rounds to break the 36-hole record at the Harbour Town Golf Links previously held by held by Jack Nicklaus (1975) and Phil Mickelson (’02). He goes in to tonight’s final round with eyes firmly fixed on the -22 record set last year by Webb Simpson.
World No.4 Collin Morikawa has the unenviable task of stopping Cink. Starting the day five shots adrift, Morikawa will bank on the momentum gathered over the opening rounds which saw him rise to the second position after a superb 4-under par round yesterday.
Defending champion Webb Simpson is also on the roll charging 34 places up the leaderboard after carding -7 to rekindle faint hopes of retaining the title. He is currently on -10 gross, eight strokes behind the leader.
It has turned out to be another disappointing outing for World No.1 Dustin Johnson whose game has failed to show up, leaving him placed a distant T36 on -5 gross. DJ showed flashes of brilliance in the second round carding four under par 67 but form deserted him again yesterday when he played level par.
The Harbour Town Golf Links course hasn’t been kind to most big guns, many of them unexpectedly failing to make the cut. These include Patrick Cantlay, Tommy Fleetwood, Sergio Garcia, and Paul Casey.
Tyrell Hatton leads the coterie of marquee players who sneaked through to the weekend rounds but are languishing in the bottom half of the leaderboard. They include Ian Poulter, Brandt Snedeker, Lee Westwood, Shane Lowry and Cameron Smith.
The winner will take home a cool Kshs 140 million.
