The Magical Kenya Open 2021 which tees off tomorrow will be beamed live across the world in estimated 500 million homes. This is the second time Kenya will be enjoying prime time on global TV following the promotion of Kenya Open to the elite European Tour status in 2019.
Prior to this, the event was held under the banner of the second tier European Challenge Tour which meant there was no live transmission with coverage limited to a paltry 20 minutes of highlights every day on select international channels.
So for the next four days, an estimated global audience of more than one billion people is going to experience Kenya’s magic through the 50 year old tournament. Thanks to the decision by the European Tour to sponsor a second event back to back- the Savannah Classic- which will take place at the same venue next week, the world will be focused on Kenya exclusively for the next 10 days.
“The 2019 tournament was a huge success. It really delivered Kenya to the world. We hosted players from more than 120 nationalities and each one of them was actually like a mini-brand ambassador for Kenya as they shared with their fans the experience of playing here. Their fans actually watched television and experienced Kenya from their living rooms,” Patrick Obath the Magical Kenya Tournament Director observed in an earlier interview.
The TV audiences are expected to grow marginally this year as the European Tour organizers have released strict Covid 19 health protocols which among other controls have barred spectators from accessing Karen Country Club the venue of the two events. Only players and match officials, currently residing in a “Bubble” will access the venue.
Consequently the European Tour TV production company will share a live feed with local and international broadcasters to ensure that golf enthusiasts do not miss the highly anticipated action at Karen. The global broadcasters are expected to air the two events for at least two hours daily.
Fans in Kenya will enjoy the Magical Kenya Open action via pay television DStv which has reserved a total of 12 hours for live broadcast from Karen for the entire duration of the tournament.
“We are proud that Kenya is hosting two editions of the European Tour for which DStv has the exclusive pay television rights. SuperSport is the home of golf and the ultimate destination for lovers of ‘The Gentleman’s Game’. You can either catch the action from the comfort of your house or anywhere else via DStv Now app,” said Nancy Matimu, MultiChoice Kenya Managing Director.
Action will commence tomorrow at 7.10 am.
