After a grueling 54 holes, the stage is set for the renewal of rivalry between veteran Dismas Indiza and Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi. The contest between the two is fast becoming the top-of –the table clash on the Safari Tour since the Zimbabwean fully arrived on the scene in the 2020/21 season.

Chinhoi made clearer his intentions of upstaging the Kenyan contingent on home soil when he shot a gutsy six under par 65 third round to open a three-stroke lead on Indiza.  “I really enjoy playing against Indiza. He is so accurate off the tee and that pushes me to concentrate to the fullest. Tomorrow I will stick to my plan which has worked so well for me over the last three days,” said Chinhoi, who carded seven birdies and one bogey today.

Head-to-head duels between the two are never short of action. This is the fifth time they will be in the same flight this season. In the first pairing, Indiza got the better of Chinhoi at Vetlab to clinch the title. The two would meet again in the third round at Sigona but played second fiddle to the eventual winner David Wakhu. Their rivalry was renewed at Muthaiga in the third round pairing where Indiza again carried the day before losing in the playoff to Mohit Mediratta. However Chinhoi had the last laugh today beating Indiza by three shots in the flight that also featured Nigeria’s Andrew Odoh. So will Indiza maintain the slight edge when the two meet tomorrow?

Apart from the Kshs 375,000 prize money, bragging rights will be at stake as the two seek to be crowned the 2020/21 Order of Merit Champion. Their consistency throughout the season saw them secure Magical Kenya Open slots way ahead of the final day. Though currently lying second and third, the two are guaranteed of dethroning the defending champion Greg Snow- who missed the cut yesterday- at the close of business tomorrow.

“I expect a tough match tomorrow. I know Chinhoi is a good player having won several titles on Safari Tour but remember I have also won on many occasions so let’s just wait and see how it goes tomorrow,” said Indiza, who sunk five  birdies in an error-free round today before dropping a shot on the 18th hole.

Simon Ngige secured a place in the Indiza-Chinhoi flight after shooting an impressive five under par 66 to dislodge Odoh. The inclusion of Ngige in the final group will spice up things as the Thika Club player will be seeking revenge over Chinhoi, who took the Nyali leg title from under his nose on the final day.

A spirited two under par 69 performance today ensured that C J Wangai will be sandwiched between Odoh and the fast-rising Visitor Mapwanya from Zimbabwe in the second last flight.   The Sigona man was among the six players who managed to shoot under par today to retain his T4 position in the penultimate round.

The qualification dogfight is also set for a dramatic ending tomorrow as five players are still in contention for the remaining four Magical Kenya slots. After making the cut Edwin Mudanyi, Anthony Omuli, Jacob Okello, Riz Charania and Mohit Mediratta stand a chance of making it to the European Tour event. At the close of the third round, Charania remained firmly entrenched in the top 10 after today’s level par round propelled him to T7 one shot better than Omuli who played one under par 70 to sneak into the top 10. Mudanyi who is currently ahead of the pack in the Order of Merit is also sitting pretty in the 11th position, with a gross score of three over par.
