Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi made it a hat trick of victories in the Safari Tour 2020/21 season when he clinched the Nyali tournament today with a narrow margin of one stroke, fending off a late charge by Dismas Indiza and Greg Snow.

An insipid fourth round performance of one over par 72 was enough to secure Chinhoi his third title of the season at the sweltering par 71 Nyali course. Known for aggressive play that has seen him effortlessly return under par scores, Chinhoi played the final round with his handbrake on, well aware his challengers in the leading group- Simon Ngige and David Wakhu, were in a self-destruct mode. The Zimbabwean romped home carding three birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey in a nervy performance that saw him uncharacteristically drop a shot at the 18th hole.  He won the Royal and Uganda Open rounds of Safari Tour.

Dismas Indiza

In a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, Indiza played the game of his life to card an impressive five under par 66, a performance that saw him finish second. Starting the day in fifth position, eight shots behind round three leader Ngige, the veteran golfer had a fine run sinking three birdies on the front nine for a three under par 33 at the breather. Aware of the daunting task ahead of him, he kept his narrow hopes alive with an eagle on the par five 17th hole, in a bogey free round.

Despite carding three under par 68 in today’s final round, Greg Snow has largely had a quite round at Nyali. A solid round made up of five birdies and two bogeys was enough to keep Snow on top of the ‘Road to Magical Kenya” Order of Merit after finishing tied second.

Commiserations are in order for Ngige and Wakhu who after exchanging the lead between themselves over the three opening rounds, were jettisoned from the podium places. In a clear case of lack of staying power, Ngige and Wakhu carded five over par 77 and six over par 78 respectively to meekly surrender the leadership on the final day.

Greg Snow

At the close of the tournament, four unsung guests managed to gatecrash into the top 10 for the first time. Mathew Wahome used home ground advantage to the fullest finishing T6 while Michael Madahana and Robinson Owiti leave the coastal city with a sense of pride having finished T8 and 10th respectively.

The Nyali event marked the second consecutive time the pros have failed to break par in the 2020/21 season coming soon after another high scoring round a fortnight ago in Naivasha.

Chinhoi walked home with Kshs 150,000 while Indiza and Snow pocketed Kshs 90,000 each for occupying the remaining podium places. The tournament had a Kshs 1 million prize purse.

Action moves to Muthaiga next week for the penultimate round of Safari Tour. The top eight local players in the Order of Merit will qualify for the Magical Kenya 2021 European Tour tournament to be held at Karen Country Club in March this year. Two slots have been reserved for foreign pros taking part in the Safari Tour.
